This controller is reliable, I have the same one on 5 bikes, in double or triple chainring. Be careful to fit metal sheath stops because the plastic sheath stops supplied with the handle will quickly be destroyed.

Friction shifters with micro ratcheting are such a great old innovation, way less fuzzy to use and maintain than indexed systems on bikes you don't necessarily want indexing.
