Always extra. 4th pair in 25 years. We put on the shoes like slippers and off we go for 8 to 10 years. As a precaution I have a thin protective sole placed on the new soles but it is as desired....

what size to choose? A long time ago I wore size 8 E (which must correspond to 41), the site recommends 41 (I wear 43.5 in Asics!) some seem to say that they fit quite large so 41 or 41.5?
