Sustainability is a matter close to the heart for an outdoor shop like Trekkinn. Spending time in nature teaches us the importance of taking care of the world around us. Therefore, Trekkinn takes responsibility for their part by creating more awareness towards sustainability on the website. In this way, we hope to help other outdoor enthusiasts make a more sustainable choice when shopping for new gear.

What does sustainability mean?

Sustainability is a wide concept. For Trekkinn, it means doing business in an ethical, responsible and environmentally friendly way. We do this by selling products that have been made of renewable materials, through a green manufacturing process or that carry any of the other sustainability certifications.

What is a sustainability certification?

Products certify as sustainable when the resourcing, materials, manufacturing or sales meet certain acceptable standards. Organizations like Better Cotton Initiative, Bluesign or Fair Wear set up their own standards and issue their label to brands answering to them. Other certifications you might find are organic cotton, ecological manufacturing and PFCs free. These have been assigned by Trekkinn itself.

Buying sustainable products has many benefits for both you as a buyer and the world around you. By choosing the greener option, you contribute to the improvement of working conditions, animal welfare and human health while reducing the environmental impact. Save the planet while you save money, as most sustainable products are also more durable and last longer.

How can I find sustainable products on Trekkinn?

You can find sustainable products by using the sustainability filter on the left side of your webpage or at the top of your mobile browser or TradeInn app. The products can be filtered by the assigned sustainability certification. The sustainability feature is also mentioned in the list of product characteristics.

Can I find sustainable products on the other Tradeinn shops?

Yes! Besides Trekkinn, you can also find sustainable products on Dressinn using the sustainability filter. We are working on expanding sustainability throughout all of our websites by assessing each product thoroughly.

Sustainability certifications

Better Cotton Initiative (BCI)

The Better Cotton initiative aims to improve the global cotton production for the environment, the farmers and the future of the sector. Brands selling products with a BCI mark source at least 5% of their cotton as Better Cotton and have a plan to increase this number to 50% within 5 years.

Bluesign

To minimize environmental impact, Bluesign provides methods for sustainable manufacturing and use of resources. Bluesign approved brands and products handle the resources, the people and the environment in a responsible way.

Fair Wear Foundation (FWF)

Fair Wear strives for better working conditions in the garment industry. To use the Fair Wear label, brands producing their own sewn goods, must implement the FWF Code of Labour Practices and monitor 90% of their supply chain.

Eco Manufacturing

Ecologically manufactured products use fewer resources by optimizing their use, help save water and energy and eventually reduce the environmental footprint.

Leather Working Group (LWG)

The leather working group is consists of all kinds of stakeholders within the leather manufacturing industry. Their goal is to improve and promote sustainable business practices. Brands working the LWG logo source leather for their products from certified suppliers. These suppliers are rated either gold, silver or bronze according to the LWG protocol.

Responsible Down Standard (RDS)

The Responsible Down Standard protects animal welfare in the down industry. Force-feeding and live-plucking is prohibited. Products carrying the RDS logo are made of 100% responsible down and feathers while the entire supply chain has been certified.

Responsible Wool Standard (RWS)

The Responsible Wool Standard ensures the wellbeing of the sheep and the preservation of the land they graze on. Brands and Products with the RWS logo only source wool from certified farms.

Oeko-Tex

The Oeko-Tex trademark confirms the human-ecological safety of products and a socially responsible and environmentally friendly production of textiles and leather. Oeko-Tex issues the following labels: MADE IN GREEN, STANDARD 100, LEATHER STANDARD, STeP, DETOX TO ZERO and EXO STANDARD.

Organic cotton

Cotton is considered to be organic when it is grown and processed in a responsible way. This means no use of toxic chemicals or genetically modified plants (GMOs). Instead, organic farming relies on ecological cycles, decreasing the environmental footprint and contributing to safer working conditions.

Vegan

Products that are marked as vegan contain no animal products. Animal-friendly alternatives were used instead.

Sustainable Materials

Bamboo, hemp, jute, linen and lyocell are examples of sustainable materials and can substitute for synthetic, man-made materials. The use of sustainable has a more positive effect on the environment.

Recycled Materials

Products marked with the Recycled Materials label have been made using recycled materials. Recycling materials reduces waste and decreases the environmental impact.

BPA Free

BPA stands for Bisphenol A and is a chemical used to harden plastic products such as water bottles, food storage containers, cutlery and sports equipment. BPA tends to leach from these products and may cause harm to humans and to the environment. Products with the BPA Free label do not contain this chemical.

PFCs Free

Perfluorinated compounds or PFCs are chemical substances often used to create water resistant materials. These chemicals can be harmful for both humans and the environment. When manufactured with an alternative to PFCs, products receive the PFCs Free label.
