I recommend lacing them all the way up, getting the half size below was a perfect fit for me. Water slid off pretty well to fit a small splash.

I'm a bigger guy with obviously bigger calfs, would they not fit well in such a case?

They do fit a larger calf. Keeps the eyelets evenly spaced out the whole length of the boot. On me the upper shaft closes completely Very comfortable. Don't pull really hard when lacing them on as eyelets can be sensitive and pop out Oiling or soaking the upper with water will make the leather easier to stretch to fit calf if needed
