If you choose a 40 and it is too big, you can always put an insole and a thick sock in it, which is advisable since the boots are hard and this way you avoid them hurting you. I don´t know what removable sole means. But I will tell you that the sole is typical of these boots. It is neither very wide nor thin in platform. It is normal. The hardness is good, it bends easily.
