Álvaro de Bazán was born in the year 1526 into a family of great seafaring tradition. From his childhood, he accompanied his father, Álvaro de Bazán the Elder, captain of the Emperor Charles, on numerous expeditions and naval battles. When he received his first command, the young Álvaro was already an experienced sailor. He successfully captained, without knowing defeat, multiple expeditions in the service of his lord, his Catholic Majesty King Philip II.

He was at the Battle of Lepanto, helped in the conquest of Lisbon and after his most notable feat, the conquest of the Azores, the last stronghold of the Portuguese opponents of King Philip, he was rewarded by his lord with the Marquisate of Santa Cruz, the greatness of Spain and many more honors. Perhaps made vain by so much recognition, he dared to propose to King Philip an ambitious undertaking that, if successful, would make Philip the most powerful monarch on earth, if he was not already.
