Divisa Novecento 1900 Blu-ray

While the scandal caused by “Last Tango in Paris” was still raging internationally, Bernardo Bertolucci began production on another equally controversial film, Novecento. The ambitious challenge of depicting the history of Italy, from the death of Verdi in 1901 to the end of World War II in 1945, involved three countries, international distribution agreements with American majors and nearly four years of work. The final result, a five-hour film, required it to be divided into two parts for its screening. A screening that was arbitrarily “shortened” in the different countries where its release was authorized: from 180 minutes to 250.

Restored to its original footage, Novecento is a passionate and enthralling account of the friendship between two men from different social classes, whose evolution leads them to follow opposing ideologies. Both Alfredo (Robert De Niro) and Olmo (Gerard Depardieu) grow up in Italy with communism, socialism and fascism, but politics is only one of the many components of their lives. Vittorio Storaro´s extraordinary photography and Ennio Morricone´s majestic score underline the beauty of this essential film, in which an international cast shines.
