The Golem: A Silent Film Classic

This silent film classic from Germany tells the legend of a statue: the Golem.

In the 16th century, Rabbi Löw, a magician and master of necromancy, lived in the Prague ghetto. To prevent the expulsion of the Jews, ordered by Emperor Rudolf II, he modeled the clay figure of the Golem and invoked the spirit of Astaharot to grant it life.

However, when the Jews manage to stay in the city, and the Golem saves the emperor´s life, the rabbi tries to invalidate his spell and take his life because he has already fulfilled his mission.

But when a servant, blinded by love, returns it to him, the clay figure escapes human influence and becomes a threat.

This masterpiece of expressionism, a clear precedent to the Frankenstein myth, is arguably the first great monster movie in film history, as two other versions, also by Paul Wegener with the Golem as the protagonist, have unfortunately been lost forever.

This DIVISA release is a must-have for cinephiles, historians, and fans of the horror genre, providing a pristine window into the dawn of cinematic horror. Experience the awe-inspiring and terrifying journey of the clay giant as it navigates a world of human fear and ambition, all captured in the stark, beautiful aesthetic of German Expressionism.
