Step back in time to the idyllic yet tense summer of 1913, with the shadow of World War I looming over Europe. The story centers on Anton, a noble and dutiful young cavalry officer who is training his squadron. A man of integrity and honor, he is invited to a grand ball at the home of the local Baron. There, his life takes an unexpected and profound turn when he meets the Baron´s beautiful daughter, Edith, who is confined to a wheelchair following a tragic accident. Moved by her plight and eager to do the right thing, Anton shows her kindness and attention. However, his compassion is tragically misinterpreted by the hopeful Edith and her family as a declaration of romantic love.

What begins as an act of pity spirals into a complex web of unspoken promises and emotional turmoil. Anton finds himself trapped by his own good intentions, unable to be honest without cruelly shattering Edith´s fragile world. As he becomes more entangled with the family, he must navigate the dangerous line between compassion and passion, honor and deceit. Bille August masterfully directs this poignant story, based on Stefan Zweig´s 1913 novel "Beware of Pity," creating a visually stunning and emotionally resonant film that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
