So I´ll explain it like this: you can use the telephone to make calls via the router, but you need a cable connection from the router, e.g. Fritzbox 7430 or newer, which has an external telephone connection. If the cable supplied is too short, you can order a longer cable from eBay or other electrical retailers and connect the telephone to it, regardless of where the router is. In our case, it is about 5 metres away from the telephone. This also works with this model. I´ve had it connected since last year and you can basically make calls like this.
