The republics solitary appearance at the 1938 World Cup aside, Cuban football has not enjoyed a distinguished past. The closest to a golden age the Cuban game has seen since its pre-war participation in France came in the early part of the 1980s when the national team made an impression on three consecutive competitions. Gaining a place at the 1980 Olympics only because of the USA boycott, an Andrés Roldán inspired team took advantage of its good fortune to emerge from the group stage ahead of Venezuela and Zambia. The run was ended in the Quarter Finals by Czechoslovakia. The year after a fifth placed finish in the CONCACAF Gold Cup represented Cubas second best ever performance in the competition and this was followed up with a strong World Cup 1982 qualification campaign. Despite their best efforts the Cubans fell just two points short of earning a place in Spain.
