Thus officially ends the journey of the ship San Telmo and its 644 crew members when on May 6, 1822, almost three years after its disappearance in the merciless Cape Horn, the Royal Spanish Navy decides to decommission them definitively.

Legend and reality merge together to form the history of one of the hundreds of ships of the Spanish Navy that still remain buried under the weight of the ocean.

With the mythical particularity that the San Telmo and its crew could have been the first men to set foot on Antarctica.

Scientific research aided by current underwater archaeological survey techniques has not yet given a definitive version of what happened.

There are no remains directly attributable to the San Telmo after several research campaigns in the area, however, it seems possible that some of its crew could have reached the Antarctic coast.

Battered, wounded and practically frozen, they would barely survive a few hours at the extreme temperatures of the frozen continent.
