The world was being squeezed between inhuman totalitarianism and Western imperialism.

Scientists experimented with psychedelic drugs, especially those used in mysterious and primitive rituals in forgotten places on the far reaches of the world.

In 1952 flying saucers were sighted over Washington DC Wilhelm Reich´s books have recently been burned and he died in prison (1957).

In short, a modern enough moment to feel familiar, but without all that miniaturized information age technology that can give the game moderator gigantic headaches.
