I bought it as a reserve octopus and I have tested it on two dives to more than 20 meters. It works perfectly, just like the Aqualung Legend (the other one I have). The only thing to improve would be the mouthpiece, which is not very comfortable, but for this price it is unbeatable.

Ideal buyer profiles

The Casual Weekend Diver

This diver enjoys exploring local dive sites on weekends and holidays. They value reliability and comfort over cutting-edge features, seeking gear that is straightforward, durable, and easy to use for recreational dives.

The Metalsub Thunder is an excellent fit, offering a dependable downstream piston design and a high-flow second stage for easy breathing. Its adjustable inhalation allows for personalized comfort, while the durable, corrosion-resistant construction ensures it can handle regular use. The silicone mouthpiece adds to comfort during longer dives.

The Budget-Conscious Diver

This diver is looking for dependable, essential gear without a high price tag. They prioritize safety and core functionality, often building their kit piece by piece, and need a reliable octopus regulator that integrates well with their existing setup.

As a reserve octopus regulator, the Metalsub Thunder provides a critical safety component at an accessible price point. Its robust, corrosion-resistant build promises longevity, and the user-friendly adjustable inhalation offers a key feature often found on more expensive models, ensuring a reliable and comfortable backup air source.

Competitive features

The Metalsub Thunder 2nd Stage Regulator is an affordable, standalone octopus regulator designed for reliability and performance. It features an adjustable inhalation effort knob for customized airflow and a lightweight, ergonomic design to reduce jaw fatigue. When compared to full regulator sets like the Metalsub Thunder DIN/INT sets, the Beuchat 1dive sets, and the Seac Px100 set, the most significant difference is that this product is solely a second stage, making it a component rather than a complete system.

Where it excels

As a standalone second stage or octopus regulator, it offers an exceptional quality-to-price ratio, providing reliable performance comparable to more expensive options. The inclusion of an adjustable inhalation effort knob allows for personalized breathing resistance, a feature often found on more premium models. Its lightweight and ergonomic design enhances comfort during long dives by minimizing jaw fatigue.

Consider alternatives if...

Divers seeking a complete, ready-to-dive system should consider the competitor products, as they are full regulator sets that include both first and second stages.

Verdict

The Metalsub Thunder 2nd Stage Regulator is an excellent choice for divers needing a reliable and affordable octopus or reserve regulator. Its adjustable inhalation and comfortable design provide significant value. While it is not a complete regulator system, it stands out as a high-performing component for divers of all levels who are building or upgrading their setup with an emphasis on value and control.
