I bought it as a reserve octopus and I have tested it on two dives to more than 20 meters. It works perfectly, just like the Aqualung Legend (the other one I have). The only thing to improve would be the mouthpiece, which is not very comfortable, but for this price it is unbeatable.

Ideal buyer profiles

The Budget-Conscious Diver

This diver seeks reliable and safe equipment without a high price tag. They prioritize core functionality and durability for their occasional dives, focusing on gear that offers the best value and longevity.

The Metalsub Thunder offers a balanced second stage with user-friendly adjustments at an accessible price point. Its durable, corrosion-resistant construction ensures long-term use, providing excellent value and reliable air supply for recreational dives.

The Casual Weekend Diver

Diving primarily on weekends and holidays in temperate waters, this individual values comfort, ease of use, and dependable performance. They want gear that is straightforward to use and maintain, allowing them to maximize their enjoyment underwater.

This regulator is an excellent choice due to its adjustable inhalation effort and comfortable silicone mouthpiece, which reduce jaw fatigue. The high-flow, balanced second stage design provides smooth, natural breathing, making it a reliable and easy-to-use option for recreational dives down to 20 meters.

The Quality-Focused Recreational Diver

This diver invests in high-quality, durable equipment for enhanced safety and a better overall diving experience. While not a technical diver, they appreciate advanced features that offer more control and comfort during their underwater explorations.

With its durable construction, balanced second stage, and adjustable inhalation, the Metalsub Thunder meets the demand for quality and control. The high-flow design ensures excellent breathing efficiency, providing the security and performance this diver expects from their equipment.

Competitive features

When evaluating the Metalsub Thunder 2nd Stage Regulator against other regulator sets, the primary distinction lies in its configuration and price point. The Thunder 2nd Stage is offered as a standalone component, whereas competitors like the Metalsub Thunder DIN/INT sets, Beuchat 1dive sets, and the Seac Px100 set are complete regulator packages. This makes the Metalsub Thunder 2nd Stage a highly focused and affordable option for divers needing a reserve octopus or a specific second-stage replacement.

Where it excels

As a standalone second stage, it offers significant affordability compared to purchasing a full regulator set, making it an excellent choice for a reserve octopus or a specific component upgrade. The design includes an adjustable inhalation effort knob, a feature that allows for personalized airflow and breathing comfort, which is not explicitly detailed for the compared full sets. It is described as a high-flow regulator engineered for smooth, natural breathing, with a lightweight and ergonomic design to reduce jaw fatigue during dives.

Consider alternatives if...

Divers seeking a complete, ready-to-dive system will need to look at alternatives like the Metalsub Thunder DIN/INT sets or the Beuchat and Seac options, as this product is only the second stage. The provided comparison data does not include detailed specifications for features like cold water compatibility or first stage design, which are critical for divers who need a full system for specific environments. Competitor sets may offer these integrated features.

Verdict

The Metalsub Thunder 2nd Stage Regulator is a strong contender for divers seeking a reliable and affordable reserve octopus or a replacement second stage. Its key advantages are its low cost and adjustable inhalation for customized comfort. While it performs well, as evidenced by tests at depth, it is not a complete regulator system. Divers needing a full setup from the outset should consider the all-in-one sets from Metalsub, Beuchat, or Seac, which provide both first and second stages.
