In 1932, Finnish surveyor Tuomas Vohlonen patented an innovative liquid-filled compass that cushioned the needle, protecting it from shock and wear and maintaining its accuracy longer. Although it was not the first design of this type, it was the most successful, having been adapted later by the Finnish army and having a great reception in various fields and industries. Because of this, Vohlonen founded in 1936 a company specializing in the production of compasses and outdoor guidance products: Suunto.
