About Kindle
Kindle is a brand of e-readers and tablets designed and marketed by Amazon. Kindle devices enable users to browse, buy, download, and read Kindle books, newspapers, magazines, and other digital media via wireless networking to the Kindle Store. Kindle also offers various applications and services for reading and writing on different platforms and devices.
The history of Kindle dates back to 2004 when Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos instructed the company’s employees to build the world’s best e-reader before Amazon’s competitors could. Amazon originally used the codename Fiona for the device. Branding consultants Michael Cronan and Karin Hibma devised the Kindle name, meaning to light a fire. They felt this was an apt metaphor for reading and intellectual excitement.
Amazon introduced the Kindle app for Windows and Mac, allowing users to read Kindle ebooks on their computers. In 2010, Amazon launched the Kindle app for Android and iOS, as well as the Kindle Cloud Reader, which enabled users to read Kindle ebooks using modern web browsers.
In 2011, Amazon released the Kindle Touch, which had a touch-sensitive screen and no keyboard, and the Kindle Fire, which was a tablet computer with the Kindle app and access to Amazon’s content and services. The Kindle Fire was later renamed to Fire and expanded to a range of devices with different sizes and features. In 2012, Amazon launched the Kindle Paperwhite, which had a higher-resolution display, a built-in light, and a longer battery life. The Kindle Paperwhite was followed by the Kindle Voyage in 2014, which had a flush-front design, an adaptive light, and page press sensors.
In 2016, Amazon introduced the Kindle Oasis, which was the thinnest and lightest Kindle, with a 7-inch screen, a waterproof design, and page turn buttons. The Kindle Oasis was updated in 2017 with an adjustable warm light, and in 2019 with a color temperature control. In 2018, Amazon released the Kindle 10th generation, which had a 6-inch screen, a front light, and Bluetooth support for Audible audiobooks. In 2021, Amazon launched the Kindle Paperwhite 5th generation, which had a 6.8-inch screen, a flush-front design, a USB-C port, and wireless charging.
In 2022, Amazon unveiled the Kindle Scribe, which was the first Kindle for reading and writing, with a 10.2-inch screen, a Wacom stylus, and a digital notebook feature. The Kindle Scribe also had a 300 ppi Paperwhite display, a 35-LED front light, and up to 64 GB of storage. The Kindle Scribe was designed to offer a natural and immersive writing experience, as well as access to millions of Kindle books and other digital content.
Kindle is more than just a brand of e-readers and tablets. It is a platform for reading, writing, and learning, with a variety of products and services that cater to different needs and preferences. Kindleusers can enjoy unlimited reading with Kindle Unlimited, a subscription service that offers access to over a million Kindle ebooks, thousands of audiobooks, and selected magazine subscriptions.
Kindle also offers tools and features to enhance the reading and writing experience, such as Kindle Highlights, which allows users to save and share their favourite passages from Kindle books; Kindle X-Ray, which provides information and insights about characters, places, and terms in Kindle books; Kindle Whispersync, which synchronizes the last page read, bookmarks, notes, and highlights across multiple devices; and Kindle Word Wise, which displays definitions and synonyms above difficult words in Kindle books. Kindle also supports various languages, formats, and accessibility options, such as text-to-speech, screen reader, magnifier, and inverted colours.
