There is no downside, it is the necessary piece to complete your wing; Now I have a steel plate, with its harness and another also with its aluminum harness adjusted to my measurements, for my trips. Keep in mind that the pack does not come with the screws to fix the wing to the plate and that if your wing is from another brand, you may have to make some adjustment in the length of the slots for the tank straps (if you don't use a supplement for the bottle).

No. This is the plate and harness only. You can mount the mono-bottle adapter or not; This also depends on the wing you put on it. There are wings that have a piece that has two types of plastic or hard rubber bars that serve to ensure that the bottle is seated and well centered and closer to the back than if you place it on the adapter. Surely, with the adapter the set will be more solid; but with the system (of the TECLINE wings, for example) the center of mass is more grouped. On the other hand, the weight of the steel piece means you need a little less ballast, although for trips (by plane) it is also a ballast.
