How to choose right size?

Can anyone share experience of choosing right size for this backpack? There is two options - is the difference only in volume or the belt has different size / width?

The 48 has a larger volume than the 38, the straps are wider and it is meant for more kilos (so also weight). If you mean the difference between S/M vs M/L then it is the back panel and the length of the belly band.
