It's a thick, sturdy fleece that works as a second or third layer. It's very warm, so I haven't needed to add anything else over my base layer and under my ski jacket. You can definitely tell the difference compared to thinner fleeces in that the structure is firm. It doesn't wrinkle like a sweater; it practically stays put if you stand it up. The elastic on the sleeves, pockets, and collar is very well finished.
