I used the 1040 for a long bikepacking trip (more than 2000km) and it was a great transition from my old 530. Awesome big screen, great GPS coverage and battery life was more than enough (most days I didn't have to charge it overnight despite doing ~150km rides every day). If you want an upgrade from the old buttons-only Garming computers but you don't want to break the bank and go for the 1050, I would definitely recommend the 1040.
