I received an email inquiring whether I’d like to answer a question someone asked as I bought a pair of these tires sometime ago. Here’s the question: "Hi ... I bought two michelin country rock tires, size 26x1.75, but the tag shows etrto 44-559, while it was supposed to be 47-559 ... can I mount them anyway? Thank you" The answer is: “Of course! The imperial sizing 26x1.75 is an approximation to the ETRTO metric size of 47-559. If one wanted to be more accurate, the imperial sizing would be better described as 26x1.85”. Note that those ETRTO numbers are the width of the tire and rim diameter in mm. The diameter is important as the tire MUST be made for the corresponding wheel size. 26” wheels, for example, are known as ETRTO 559’s. 700C wheels are ETRTO 622 and so forth. The width however is much less critical as one can mount a variety of tire widths on bike wheels. The key measurement of the rim “width” is its internal width. If a rim has a 17 mm inner width (e.g., older road) then one can mount tires that are typically 19-32 mm width. Likewise 24 mm inner width rims (e.g., for gravel) mount tires that are 28-45 mm in width. The important thing is not to mount a tire that is narrower than the rim internal. As an example a 23 mm tire on a 26 inner diameter rim. The tire would simply not fit properly being narrower than the rim and would be prone to pinch flats if the tire were to hold air in the first place. On the other hand, the ideal setup is a tire that is as wide or slightly wider than the rim outer width. This is aerodynamically more efficient and key on road racing bikes and especially time trial bikes. I hope this helps.
