It´s how they set it up in the US, you don´t have to change the levers but the hydraulic hoses. If you buy a front brake and a rear brake, both assembled, that is, with levers, hoses and calipers, then you have to change the left hose for the right one, simply because being European style, the left one is short and the right one is long. You will not find a left lever mounted with a long hose to function as a rear brake, the left lever is always fitted with a short hose to function as a front brake.
