I no longer ride my road bike without my Garmin Varia. To protect it from loss, I have a protective case and the Garmin screw clamp for round seatposts. The included mount with the O-ring doesn't seem very durable. I'm currently using two of them. I ride in Austria, where flash photography is allowed, but not in Germany. Only continuous light is permitted on my Varia RTL 516.

Once you've tried it, you won't be able to live without it! The car detection works incredibly well; it's impressive. Even on a narrow, winding road, the radar detects cars very early—it's almost magical. A major advantage of the Varia is that when you're driving fast and the wind makes it hard to hear what's coming up behind you (typically on a downhill stretch), the Varia prevents you from constantly looking back and allows you to drive with confidence. Another benefit is that when you're overtaken by a line of cars, you don't have to turn around to see how many are ahead. The only slight drawback is that in the city, the GPS beeps a lot because of the heavy traffic.

Great radar/light, a gift for my father's birthday. He's very happy with it and appreciates the added safety. Connecting it to a Garmin Edge 530 was very easy. However, it's a real shame there's no safety lanyard to attach it to the saddle, for example, to prevent it from getting lost if it comes undone. There isn't even a hole to add one... (whereas it's included with cycling computers). This is something that needs improvement.
